What is Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy?

Pelvic floor physiotherapy is a specialized type of physiotherapy that focuses on the muscles, ligaments, and tissues that support the pelvic organs.

How Does Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy Work?

During pelvic floor physiotherapy, your physiotherapist will assess your pelvic floor muscles to identify any weaknesses, tightness, or dysfunction. They may use biofeedback, manual therapy, or pelvic floor muscle exercises to help you improve your muscle strength, coordination, and control. They will also provide education on proper posture, breathing, and relaxation techniques.

What to Expect During Your Treatment

During pelvic floor physiotherapy, you can expect a personalized approach to care that is tailored to your individual needs and goals. Your female physiotherapist will begin by conducting a thorough assessment of your pelvic floor muscles, which may involve an internal examination using a gloved finger. This assessment will help your physiotherapist identify any weakness, tightness, or dysfunction in your pelvic floor muscles. Based on your assessment results, your physiotherapist will develop a treatment plan that may include exercises, manual therapy, and biofeedback techniques to help you improve your pelvic floor muscle strength, coordination, and control. Your physiotherapist will also provide education on proper posture, breathing, and relaxation techniques to help you achieve optimal pelvic health.

AMAZING!!!i had lower back pain for 4 months, affecting my sleep, walking, and sitting. My first time ever going to a chiropractor yesterday. The ladies at he front desk are incredibly friendly, and helpful. Dr. Mauch did x-rays and then gave me a detailed review of my problem. He gave me an adjustment, and I slept like a log, with a sleep score of 89%, pain free getting out of bed, and walking around.I am so thrilled and thankful!!!This should be your only stop for a chiro in Durham!!!!Thank you Dr. Mauch...

Pelvic Floor Therapy F.A.Q.

No, pelvic floor therapy is not limited to women. Both men and women can benefit from pelvic floor therapy. Men may seek pelvic floor therapy for conditions such as post-prostatectomy incontinence, pelvic pain, or sexual dysfunction. It is essential to find a pelvic floor therapist who has experience in treating the specific needs of each gender.
The duration of pelvic floor therapy varies depending on the individual and the specific condition being treated. Some people may experience significant improvement within a few sessions, while others may require more extended treatment. Typically, a course of pelvic floor therapy can range from a few weeks to several months, with regular sessions scheduled once or twice a week.
Pelvic floor therapy should not be painful, although some individuals may experience mild discomfort during certain assessments or treatment techniques. It is important to communicate any discomfort to your therapist so they can adjust their approach accordingly. The goal of therapy is to alleviate pain and improve pelvic floor function, not to exacerbate symptoms.
In many cases, a referral from a doctor is not necessary to see a pelvic floor therapist. However, it’s always a good idea to check with your insurance provider to understand their requirements. Some insurance plans may require a referral for coverage purposes, particularly if you have a specific diagnosis or if you plan to use your insurance for payment.
Yes, pelvic floor exercises, also known as Kegel exercises, can be done at home without a therapist’s supervision. However, it is still advisable to consult with a pelvic floor therapist initially to ensure you are performing the exercises correctly. They can provide you with personalized instructions, proper technique, and guidance tailored to your specific needs. Performing exercises incorrectly may not yield the desired results or may even worsen symptoms, so it’s important to get proper instruction.
The time it takes to see results from pelvic floor therapy can vary depending on the individual and their specific condition. Some people may experience improvement in their symptoms within a few weeks of starting therapy, while others may require several months of consistent treatment. Adherence to the recommended exercises and lifestyle modifications, as well as regular communication with your therapist, can help expedite progress.

Pelvic floor therapy is generally safe, but as with any medical treatment, there can be potential side effects or risks. These are usually minimal and may include temporary muscle soreness, increased urinary or bowel frequency, or mild discomfort during certain assessment or treatment techniques. It’s important to communicate any concerns or adverse effects with your pelvic floor therapist, who can modify the treatment accordingly.
Yes, pelvic floor therapy can be beneficial for addressing sexual dysfunction related to pelvic floor muscle dysfunction or pain. Conditions such as vaginismus, dyspareunia (painful intercourse), or decreased sexual satisfaction can be effectively treated through pelvic floor therapy. The therapist can guide you through specific exercises and techniques to improve muscle coordination, relaxation, and overall pelvic floor function, which may positively impact sexual well-being.
Yes, pelvic floor therapy can be helpful during pregnancy. It can address various concerns, such as pelvic pain, urinary incontinence, or preparation for childbirth. A pelvic floor therapist with expertise in prenatal care can guide you through safe exercises and techniques specifically tailored for pregnancy. It’s advisable to consult with your healthcare provider or OB/GYN to determine the suitability and timing of pelvic floor therapy during pregnancy.
Pelvic floor therapy is often covered by insurance, but coverage can vary depending on your specific insurance plan and the diagnosed condition. It’s recommended to contact your insurance provider directly to understand the extent of coverage, any required referrals or pre-authorization, and any potential out-of-pocket expenses. Additionally, confirm with the pelvic floor therapist’s office if they accept your insurance plan to ensure seamless reimbursement or cost management.
